Why not make a red ale with grenadine?

Anyone ever dabbled in the dark arts of artificial colouring?

Yes.

I have some funky stuff from a Maltster. A little goes a long way, believe me.

I've drunk green beer on St Pats day but I'm not sure that counts.

Then again they could have been tricking me - its hard to see green in amongst Guiness.

If I do, fillip me with a three-man beetle.

You may or may not be surprised to know that a lot of the bigger breweries use colouring in a lot of their brews. Basically they will aim for their brew to come out a bit lighter than they are after using the colour from the malts. They will then add caramelised sugar (EBC around 35,000) to make finer adjustments so that the beer is the same colour every time. At 35,000 EBC a little goes a long way.

Cheers
